Recognizing the Most Common Types of Diamond Cuts

If you have been shopping for jewelry, chances are that you have heard some words that you do not understand - and diamond cuts are likely no exception. There are many different types of diamond cuts, and each type is very specific and unique. If you don't know what all of the diamond cut types are, the following should give you a general idea of some of the most common:

  • Round - Round is perhaps one of the most popular cuts for diamonds. From the top, looking down, the diamond is literally in a round shape. From the side, you will notice that it goes down into a point, but the shape is taken from the top view.
  • Marquise - Another popular cut for diamonds is the Marquise. The reason this is a popular cut is because you can purchase a smaller carat to save money, but it gives the illusion that it is bigger. It is almost oval shaped, but with points at each end, rather than curves.
  • Princess - The Princess cut diamond is one that has been gaining in popularity. The reason for this is that it looks big and bold. It is in the shape of a square, and the four corners make the diamond stand out more and look larger. Additionally, the princess cut allows a lot of light in, making it bright.
  • Pear - The Pear shaped diamond is a sweet cut that is shaped like a teardrop. It might seem daintier to some, but is often a larger carat than in looks.
  • Emerald and Radiant - The Emerald and Radiant cut diamonds are very similar in shape. The Emerald is an irregular rectangle, which means that the four corners are essentially cut off, making it eight-sided. The same is true for the Radiant cut, only as a square, rather than a rectangle.

There are other cuts as well including the Heart, Asscher, Oval, and more. Whether you plan to surprise someone special with one of these types of diamond cuts, or if you are ring shopping together, there are many options out there to choose from, and each has a diamond value that ranges in amount with the cut and size of the diamond.
