The Ever Changing Value of Engagement Rings

The value of an engagement ring isn't static. Like all other investments, it can increase or decrease over time. While you may know what you paid for the ring, that doesn't mean that the ring has the same value as it did 5, 10, or 50 years ago. There are many factors that go into a ring appraisal, including the quality of the stone(s), the design, the metal, and the overall condition.

The Stones

The stones will account for up to 95% of the ring's total value. If the diamonds, sapphires, rubies, etc. are in good condition, then you can expect to get a fair price that reflects the stone's value within the market. One of the first things a jeweler will look at is the stone's GIA grade. The higher the grade, the more valuable the stone. Moreover, accent stones will have less value than larger stones. Remember, one-carat of accent stones is not equal to a single stone of the same weight.

The exception to stone valuations occurs if the ring has an interesting history. For instance, if it was owned by a celebrity or famous individual. In such cases, the value of engagement rings and other pieces of jewelry can far exceed the standard market rate.

The Metal

Metal prices fluctuate daily. What you paid for gold 25 years ago will have no bearing on what it's worth today. The same is true for all precious metals. Typically, the value of the metal in a ring is between 5-25% of the ring's total value. Moreover, it's important to remember that most rings are metal alloys and not solid gold, etc.

The Brand

Branded engagement rings are more valuable than those from companies that don't have the same reputation. Rings from Tiffany's and other high-end jewelers are more valuable because these brands are well-known symbols of quality craftsmanship that convey status. The relative rarity of rings from well-known companies tends to make them highly prized within the jewelry market.
