What Are The Differences Between White Gold and Platinum?

Two of the more popular materials for jewelry are white gold and platinum.  At first glance, these two materials may not seem much different, but what exactly is the difference?

Long-Term Care

While white gold is incredibly beautiful, you should know that as it ages, it will change significantly.  White gold is not pure gold.  White gold is made up of yellow gold and either nickel, silver, or palladium.  Once these metals are mixed, the piece of jewelry will be rhodium plated.  The rhodium gives the ring a shinier and whiter finish.  However, as time goes on, the plate will begin to wear away and the gold tone will start to show through.  Of course, when this happens you can get it re-plated again

On the other hand, platinum is one of the purest forms of metal you can buy.  Of course, over time, platinum will fade and  begin to lose its shine.  But, this type of metal can also be brought back to life by a jeweler by simply polishing it.

Hypoallergenic Benefits

When it comes to comparing white gold and platinum you'll also want to consider the possible irritation to your skin.  This is especially true if it's a wedding ring that you'll be wearing most of the day.  Hypoallergenic materials will help in reducing the possibility of an allergic reaction.

Platinum is truly the most hypoallergenic material because it's 95% pure.

On the other hand, with white gold's mixture of metals which could cause sensitivity to someone's skin, it is advisable to highly consider platinum, if you have had previous allergic reactions to silver, nickel, or palladium.

Composition and Weight

Another factor you'll want to consider when choosing between white gold and platinum is the overall composition and weight of the metals.

White gold is usually offered in either 14k or 18k versions. It tends to be a softer metal and weighs less than platinum.

Platinum is a strong and really durable metal.  This is also the harder and heavier material as well.  While it might not be that much of a weight difference than white gold, there is a definite difference.

Cost Of White Gold And Platinum

One factor that is usually a big deciding factor between white gold and platinum is the cost.  Because platinum is a purer material, weighs more, and is more dense, it usually will be the more expensive option.  14K white gold is only 58.5% gold and 18K white gold is only 75% gold so it would be the less expensive option.

If price is not an issue, and you like the beneficial and durability aspects of platinum, then platinum is your best bet.  On the other hand, if you looking for something that is more light-weight, less expensive or budget-friendly the white gold is going to be the better option.
